To perform a keratin treatment, you’ll need the following tools and items:
1. Clarifying Shampoo: To cleanse the hair and remove any product build-up before the treatment.
2. Keratin Treatment Solution: The main product that will be applied to the hair.
3. Gloves: To protect your hands while applying the keratin solution.
4. Mixing Bowl and Brush: To mix and apply the keratin treatment evenly.
5. Sectioning Clips: To divide the hair into manageable sections for even application.
6. Wide-Tooth Comb: To distribute the treatment through the hair and ensure it’s evenly applied.
7. Hair Dryer: To dry the hair after the treatment has been applied.
8. Flat Iron: To seal the keratin treatment into the hair. Ensure it can reach a high temperature (usually around 450°F or 232°C).
9. Fine-Tooth Comb: To help guide the flat iron and ensure the hair is smooth and straight.
10. Towel: To remove excess water from the hair after washing with the clarifying shampoo.
11. Heat-Protective Cape: To protect the client’s clothes from the treatment and heat.
12. Ventilation: Ensure the room is well-ventilated to avoid inhaling fumes from the treatment.
BRIEF STEP BY STEP BELOW:
PLEASE READ: that it is possible to do the treatment at home successfully, it does require skill, experience and technique to reach a salon level result.
1. Prepare the Hair: Apply
a generous amount of clarifying shampoo to the hair. Focus on the roots and
work your way down to the ends. You may need to do this 2x or 3x times
depending on the hair and how course it is.
PRO TIP: Use 1 part bi-carb soda with every three parts clarifying
shampoo for very resistant, coarse hair types in the first wash to cleanse and
soften the hair.
2. Section the Hair: Divide the hair into manageable sections using clips.
3. Apply the Keratin Solution: Wearing gloves, use the brush to apply the keratin treatment to each section of hair, starting from the roots and working your way down to the ends. Ensure ample product is applied and combing out excess back into the bowl.
4. Comb Through: Use a wide-tooth comb to evenly distribute the treatment and remove any excess product.
5. Allow hair to process: Place hair under a professional hair heat machine or use a hair cap to seal in the treatment. The longer the processing the straighter the result.
Heat machine 30mins or 60minutes with the cap.
6. Dry the Hair: After processing time, Blow-dry the hair completely, ensuring it is fully dry.
6. Flat Iron: Flat iron the hair in small sections, passing over each section a number of times to seal the treatment into the hair.
Thin/weaker hair = around 10 times.
Normal hair = 15 times
Thicker hair = 15 - 20 times
PRO TIP: Do not use large sections keep them small to medium sized.
7. Wash Out: Let the hair cool for 5 minutes then use Step 3 Intensive Rejuvenation Shampoo. Using cool water and shampoo wash the hair thoroughly from scalp to ends ensuring all the hair and scalp gets a shampoo and wash.
8. Final Mask and pH reset: After shampooing using step 3, use step 4 Intensive Rejuvenation Mask. Using a lot of mask apply from roots to ends ensuring it covers the entire mane and even scalp. Leave for 5 minutes then rinse with like warm water ensuring it has been thoroughly rinsed.
9. Final Blow Dry with Fingers. Towel dry the hair so that it is just damp and start blow waving ensuring the air flow is going down the hair (causing the hairs cuticle down) using your fingers and hands to allow the air to dry the entire mane. It should take 5 minutes to dry and see the beautiful results.
10. Optional: Use a finishing product such as ultimate straight on the dry hair with the hair iron for a beautiful salon finish.
